That was down to the wireless part inside the console and had nothing to do with a setting, so no system update could ever change it. Games kept getting bigger for three years while the console kept pulling them through the most congested signal in the house. Sony added the faster Wi-Fi in 2016 with the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro. The original model never got it, which is why a network cable is still the fix.
