Why Your PS4 Download Speed Was Actually Trash
If your downloads crawled on the first PS4, the console was a big part of the reason. Most home routers send out two kinds of Wi-Fi. One reaches further but is slower, and nearly everything in the house shares it, from phones and TVs to the interference from a microwave. The other is faster and far less crowded. The PS4 that launched in 2013 could only connect to the slower, busier one. That was down to the wireless part inside the console and had nothing to do with a setting, so no system update could ever change it. Games kept getting bigger for three years while the console kept pulling them through the most congested signal in the house. Sony added the faster Wi-Fi in 2016 with the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro. The original model never got it, which is why a network cable is still the fix.
